Matthew Leonard: Q&A with Project Manager on Quality

We spoke with Project Manager Matthew Leonard about Gray’s Quality program and why it stands out among others in the industry.
Can you tell us what your normal workday or “day in the life” is like?
“I start my day with ‘Plan of the Day’ talks with both project management and site management teams. Then, it’s all about serving my teammates and the customer. I work on ensuring that priorities are aligned on all levels and that I’m always putting my best effort forward in planning for the tasks to come.”
What does Quality mean to you?
“To me, Quality means respecting the process of pre-planning. Our teams spend many hours pre-planning a task that may only take minutes or a few hours to execute. But, it’s those hours, days, and weeks the team spends pre-planning that ultimately make the difference in a successful execution. The pre-planning hours, days, and weeks are what we focus on day in and day out here at Gray.”
How has Gray’s Quality program changed since your time at Gray?
“There’s an immense focus on continuous improvement in our program. Our Quality team has done an exceptional job ensuring that teams are setup for success by learning from the past with our ‘Lessons Learned.'”
Explain the role of technology as it pertains to Quality.
“Gray’s Quality program has been greatly influenced by evolving technology within the industry, and the company has done a great job staying out in front! Over the past few years, we’ve been able to implement the use of large touchscreen monitors on site that provide access to our digital progress tracking softwares. We can spend time with the customer and show them site progress in real time. This allows us to communicate any areas of upcoming focus to the team effectively. This precise accuracy has yielded great feedback from customers—as they feel engaged and can very easily grasp progress at the touch of their fingers.”
What sets Gray’s Quality program apart from others in the industry?
“Our Quality program is set apart from others in the industry because of our efforts to ensure that Quality is always relational to Safety. In addition, the company invests time in the project teams to ensure all levels are empowered to take on their Quality Manager roles.”
