Strategic Steps for Growth: Q&A with Gray Design Manager Jimmy McKenzie
As companies grow and transition, part of the excitement is being along for the ride. For longer-term employees, it’s a chance to see strategic implementation of plans and processes to advance the company from today into the future. We spoke with Jimmy McKenzie, design manager with Gray Architects and Engineers, about Gray’s growth during his time and some of his favorite memories from being on the Gray team.
What’s your favorite part about being a member of the Gray team?
“Just that, being a member of the Gray team. I feel valued knowing that the Gray team has my back. Also, at any given time, I feel that I can reach out to seek advice from anyone within our network who has specialized knowledge, and they are always willing to help. It’s the feeling of being a member of a family.”
Since your time at Gray, how has the company seen growth and change?
“During my time at Gray I have seen significant growth. Before I joined, Gray began a more concentrated focus on the food & beverage market. Having completed projects for customers like Clemens Food Group, Yamasa, Nestlé Waters, and Pepsi Bottling Group—Gray became highly specialized in this dynamic industry. The company also made multiple, strategic acquisitions, enabling our teams to provide a full suite of turnkey services for our customers within the food & beverage industry. The number of team members has also grown exponentially during my time with Gray. In addition, we continue to successfully win and execute larger, more complex projects while staying true to our core values and providing unforgettable customer experiences and great projects.”
What’s the most valuable professional advice you’ve ever been given?
“Be a lifelong learner.”
What’s your fondest memory since being part of the Gray family?
“There have been so many. Some of the fondest include Gray Annual Meetings and after parties, the annual Gray family tailgate, Gray Christmas parties, Gray breakfast with Santa, Gray AE Pay-It-Forward, and Gray Thanksgiving luncheons.”
In one word, how would you describe Gray?
“Rewarding.”
