Home Sweet Home: Q&A with Vertaio Wilson
Gray’s first core value is putting safety and quality of life first. For Vertaio Wilson, assistant project manager at Gray, quality of life means being close to home in order to spend time with his family in Alabama.
Initially joining NexGen, Wilson lent his expertise to projects in Ohio before relocating to his home state of Alabama to join the Gray Southeast team. We spoke with Wilson about his role with the company and what he appreciates about Gray.
Tell me about your career arc and what led you to Gray?
My journey into construction began during my time at Alabama A&M University, where I majored in construction management and was a student-athlete on the football team. I had the chance to intern with an engineering firm in Austin, Texas, which led to a full-time project engineer role upon graduation. I’ve worked on various projects managing scopes from electrical power infrastructure to foundational and structural scopes. I came across Gray and did some research on the company before applying for an open position. When I came on board, I didn’t realize I knew a few people who I’d worked with in the past were a part of the Gray family, which was super cool.
What’s a typical day like for you in your current role?
Right now, my days consist of a lot of coordination meetings with vendors and subcontractors, reviewing design plans, and ensuring that all documentation is in order. Additionally, I might be working on piping designs, attending vendor meetings, or handling document control tasks.
How would you describe Gray in one word or phrase?
Consistent. They’ve proven to be reliable in their commitments, such as allowing me to work closer to home while in the field—something I appreciate and value.
What sets Gray apart from other service providers in the construction industry, in your opinion?
Gray stands out for its emphasis on work-life balance, collaboration, and opportunities for career growth. The people I work with make my job great, and the company prioritizes the work-life balance of team members—which really makes people want to be a part of the Gray family.
How does working at Gray align with your personal values?
Gray’s commitment to community service resonates with my values of giving back and serving others. Albert Einstein once said, “Only a life lived in the service of others is worth living.” Whether it’s participating in initiatives like Toys for Tots around the holiday season or chipping in for a fundraiser someone’s kid is having at their school, Gray actively demonstrates its commitment to making a positive impact in the community.
Do you have a memorable experience since joining Gray that you’d like to share?
Probably my most memorable experience was working on a project in Ohio during a snowstorm. Coming from Alabama, it was a new and challenging environment, but it showcased the team’s resilience and dedication to getting the job done safely.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your experience at Gray?
I’m grateful for the opportunities Gray has provided me, and I’m also grateful for my family and the traditions they’ve instilled in me—I don’t take it for granted. The company’s culture has allowed me to pursue my career goals while maintaining a fulfilling work-life balance. I’m happy to have found a home in the construction industry here at Gray.
If someone was visiting your hometown, what activities should they do?
I’m from Phenix City, Alabama, so we have some great whitewater rafting and ziplining nearby. There is also a plethora of other outdoor activities you could do. I would recommend renting ATVs and going on a ride with friends.
