Gray and Cerrowire Break Ground on New Manufacturing Operation
Gray, a fully integrated, global services provider for the manufacturing market, and Cerrowire, a Marmon/Berkshire Hathaway company known as a leading U.S. manufacturer of copper building wire, broke ground today on a new 270,000 s.f. manufacturing facility in Hartselle, AL. The facility will produce Metal Clad cable and will incorporate advanced systems and equipment, allowing the company to further its commitment to high quality and cost control.
The company selected Gray to design and build its new operation based on a relationship that began two decades ago.
“Relationships are at our core, and we couldn’t be prouder to partner with such a great company through a relationship that started with one of our team members,” says Drew Romans, regional manager of Gray’s Southeast Office in Birmingham, AL. “Cerrowire is advancing its business with this operation to help bolster the manufacturing and construction industries, and we’re thrilled to play a role.”
“Marmon chose Gray for its new metal-clad cable facility because of its experience designing and building manufacturing facilities on an accelerated schedule,” says Stephen M. Becht, Esq., P.E., broker, vice president of Capital Investments & Project Mgmt., Marmon Holdings, Inc. “Their professionalism and sense of urgency have been critical in moving our project forward. We look forward to continuing our relationship and completing this project with them to exceed expectations.”
Located on 33 acres at the at the Morgan Center Business Park, the greenfield facility will support Cerrowire’s business of supplying electrical distributors, wholesalers, and retailers across the U.S. With sustainability in mind, the team including the Cerrowire, Gray, and key partners, is incorporating emulsion technology to decrease waste of lubricant oil while allowing workers to reclaim and recycle. This advancement improves efficiency with little to no downtime while eliminating waste.
“Adding Metal Clad cable to our product portfolio allows us to leverage our core business—manufacturing building wire—and to provide a strong building wire solution that fulfills a growing need for our customers,” adds Cerrowire President Stewart Smallwood. “We’re proud to celebrate our company’s 100th anniversary with this exciting milestone.”
The groundbreaking ceremony included an official “turning of the dirt” and “connecting the power” along with the following guest speakers: Jeremy Nails, president & CEO of Morgan County Economic Development Association (MCEDA); Ted Clem, director of business development at the Alabama Department of Commerce; Stewart Smallwood, president of Cerrowire; Jared Argyle, president of Marmon Electrical Group; Senator Arthur Orr, MCEDA Board Chairman; Mayor Randy Garrison, City of Hartselle; and Chairman Ray Long, Morgan County Commission. Guests consisted of local government officials, community leaders, and partners.
The project is expected to be complete at the end of the year with close to 150 workers on site at peak construction. Cerrowire will create over 120 jobs for the region.
