- Who is Gray Construction?
A family-owned company, Gray Construction was founded by James Norris and Lois Howard Gray on October 11, 1960. Since then, Gray has grown from a small-town contractor into a nationally ranked engineering, architecture and construction firm with projects stretching from coast to coast. Today, the company is led by Stephen Gray, one of the four Gray brothers who has led the company over the course of its history.
Gray is headquartered in Lexington, Ky., and has regional offices in Anaheim, Calif.; Birmingham, Ala.; Charlotte, N.C.; Versailles, Ky.; Alberta, Canada, and Tokyo, Japan, to better serve our customers all across the world.

- What sets Gray Construction apart from other design-build firms?
The Go-To for Manufacturing Plant Construction
For nearly 60 years, Gray has been meeting the design-build and construction management needs of the manufacturing industry, having built over 90 million s.f. for more than 1,000 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. Gray is one of only a handful of truly integrated design-build firms in America, which means we have all the disciplines in-house to execute a project. Customers come to Gray for its exceptional record in addressing companies’ speed to market needs to better reach their own customers. Due to this level of experience, Gray is consistently ranked among the top U.S. contractors in manufacturing plant construction.
Among the Top 10 Contractors in Retail & Hospitality Facility Construction
Having built over 42 million s.f. of retail space and almost 1 million s.f. of hospitality space across the country, Gray has been responding to the construction management, renovation and design-build needs of its customers for decades. This level of experience has positioned us among top U.S. contractors in both retail and hospitality by Commercial Construction & Renovation magazine.
Experts in LEED® Design & Certification
Incorporating elements of LEED® design in new construction projects is a priority for Gray and our customers, with over 11 million s.f. of LEED® construction projects under our belt. Ranked 58th among the Top Green Building Construction Firms, Gray is poised and committed to helping our customers achieve their LEED® construction goals.
Unmatched International Expertise
Gray Construction has completed more than 434 projects for international customers, amounting to some 55 million s.f. of plant space. Our bilingual staff is adept at translating non-U.S. design and building details into U.S. manufacturing standards. With this level of experience, Gray has developed a deep understanding of the unique needs of international customers, giving us a distinct advantage over our competition.
A Leader in Safety & Quality
Putting safety and quality of life first is more than just our No. 1 core value. Not only do we place emphasis on our people and try to mitigate the risk of injuries, prioritizing safety simply makes good business sense—fewer injuries mean less time lost in production. Gray is a recipient of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Willis Construction Safety Excellence Award Grand Prize, the industry’s highest safety award in the nation.
Gray’s Quality Management System (QMS) is based on our continuous improvement philosophy and reflects more than five decades of experience in the construction business. Our QMS procedures begin day one of the project pre-construction phase and continue until the project is complete. It is a living, dynamic process that ensures quality pulse-points are being monitored and analyzed for compliance to the project specifications. The end-result: quality facilities that exceed expectations now, and into the future.
