Lexington, Ky., November 6, 2013 – The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) awarded Gray, formerly Gray Construction, with a national Design-Build Project Award in the Industrial/Process/Research Facilities category for the Siemens Gas Turbine plant in Charlotte, N.C. Gray was presented with the honor at the 2013 Design-Build Conference and Expo on November 5 at the Mirage in Las Vegas, Nev.
Siemens Energy, Inc. selected Gray to design and build this 489,905 s.f. gas turbine manufacturing plant and office complex on the campus of Siemens’ existing Steam Turbine and Generator Service Center in Charlotte, N.C. At the time, this was the largest project for Siemens worldwide, and the largest project in Charlotte in 30 years. The LEED® Gold certified facility was constructed with 12,000 tons of steel and houses a 450-ton crane – one of the largest in the U.S. – with an additional 250-ton crane installed on the same rail.
According to DBIA, Project Awards highlight exemplary projects that not only achieve budget and schedule goals, but that also demonstrate advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery, including design-build best practices. Winning projects are led by teams that have truly harnessed the power of integration to innovate and deliver projects beyond owners’ expectations.
Gray, a nationally ranked engineering, architecture and construction firm, has designed and built nearly 700 manufacturing facilities across the U.S. Currently, Gray has several large projects—mostly located across the South—that are underway or recently completed including a Michelin Earthmover tire manufacturing plant in Starr, S.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem, N.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility near Athens, Ga.</a>; a Whirlpool plant in Cleveland, Tenn.; a Roxul insulation manufacturing facility in Byhalia, Miss.; a Drax Biomass wood pellet storage and shipping facility in Port Allen, La.; and multiple projects for Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.
