Major Metals Processor Chooses Gray for First Greenfield Facility in 100 Years.
Aurubis AG is a leading provider of non-ferrous metals. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, the company is the largest copper producer in Europe (No. 2 globally) and the world’s largest copper recycler by volume. The company processes metal concentrates, scrap metals, and metal-bearing recycling materials into high-purity metals and value-added products for a wide variety of industries.
For its first greenfield facility in more than 100 years, the customer selected Gray to build the first multimetal secondary smelter in the U.S. The facility is being designed to operate as a zero-waste facility.

The facility, a 250,000 s.f. manufacturing plant, will process up to 90,000 tons of complex recyclable materials each year, producing 30,000 tons of blister copper from recycled components. More than 1,600 tons of structural steel were required for project construction, which includes 15 buildings across the 100-acre manufacturing campus.
“We’re setting a clear example of sustainable growth and becoming a forerunner for multimetal recycling in the U.S.,” says Roland Harings, Aurubis CEO. “The world needs metals like copper, [but] supply cannot keep up with demand, and there is a lack of suitable recycling options, especially in the USA…Aurubis’ state-of-the-art facility in Augusta will initiate a trend reversal—for the environment, for producers, and for the conversion to a regenerative economy.”
Production is expected to begin early in 2024 and will bring an estimated 130 jobs to the region.
