Siemens’ new 289,842 s.f. wind energy nacelle production facility produces the massive structures used in wind turbines. These 90-ton oblong steel beams sit perched atop wind turbine towers that house generators, gears, and electrical systems.
This facility involved heavy loads to allow for the transport and movement of nacelles throughout the building. A jointless, maintenance-free floor slab, the first of its kind in the U.S., was used as a part of this project.
The new facility produces approximately 650 nacelles or 1,500 megawatts per year.

Siemens Energy, Inc. and Gray have a history that dates back more than 20 years. The companies partnered on a milestone project to build a gas turbine manufacturing facility, which at the time was Siemens’ largest project, and the largest project in Charlotte for three decades.
Siemens Energy, Inc., and Gray have worked together for more than 20 years. When it came time for the company to renovate more than 230,000 s.f. of existing space in a former Sony plant and construct a new 62,000 s.f. addition to the building, the company called on Gray again.
