Gray Awarded National Design-Build Honor
Gray was awarded a 2012 National Design-Build Honor Award on November 8, 2012 at the Design-Build Awards dinner in New Orleans, LA. Gray received the award in the Industrial/Process/Research facility category for the Siemens U.S. Nacelle Facility in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The 289,842 s.f. complex manufacturing facility in Hutchinson, Kan. is designed to carry heavy loads to allow the movement of 90-ton nacelles throughout the building. Teqton, a jointless maintenance-free floor slab, was installed in this facility, and is the first of its kind in the U.S. The Siemens nacelle production facility, about the size of five football fields, achieved LEED® Gold certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. This is Siemens’ first LEED Gold certified production facility in the U.S. and the first LEED Gold new construction/industrial site in Kansas.
Gray, ranked 2nd among the U.S. Top Green Contractors in Manufacturing Plant Construction, provided architecture, engineering and construction management services for the facility. Currently, Gray has several large projects, mostly located across the South, that are underway or recently completed including: a Michelin Earthmover tire manufacturing plant in Starr, S.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem, N.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility near Athens, Ga.; a Siemens gas turbine plant in Charlotte, N.C.; and a Whirlpool plant in Cleveland, Tenn.
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is an association of leaders in the design and construction industry utilizing design-build and integrated project delivery methods to achieve high performance projects. The Design-Build awards competition recognizes the achievements of owners and design-build teams in 10 categories across the spectrum of horizontal and vertical construction. To be considered for a prize, a project must have been completed on time and on budget and demonstrate use of DBIA best practices.
