The Support That Builds Great Projects: Meet Hayley Fugate
At Gray, every team member plays an important part in building the company’s story. From those out on the jobsites to the ones behind the scenes keeping everything running smoothly, few roles show that spirit of service and dedication like Hayley Fugate, executive assistant.
In this conversation, Hayley shares her career path to Gray, what inspires her, and the lessons she’s learned along the way.

What was the career path that led you to Gray?
After graduating from Morehead State University with a degree in convergent media, I worked for Enterprise in a sales role. From there, I joined career services at Morehead State University. During that time, Jamie Patterson and John Hunt visited campus for a recruiting event. I happened to be the one assigned to stay late and guide them to the classes they were speaking to.
About a month later, an administrative assistant role under the Distribution market group opened up, and John reached out again. I applied, interviewed within a few days, and the rest is history.
What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are the same, but most of my time is spent coordinating and producing proposals. I work closely with the team on proposal content, with Marketing for any supporting materials, and with Rodney Carpenter to keep him informed and aligned. I make sure everyone stays on the same page, and when customers visit, I’m also involved in face-to-face or virtual meetings and interviews.
Do you have a favorite Gray memory?
The first time I was on stage at an annual meeting, our project won an award. It was the first project I had been assigned to from start to finish, and I had no idea we were winning—it was a total surprise. As an administrative assistant, you often feel like you’re working behind the scenes, supporting others. So to be recognized in front of everyone was really meaningful. It reminded me that even the smallest tasks add up to something important.
How would you describe Gray in one word or phrase?
Supportive. I’ve had several major life events since joining Gray, and every time, the people here have been incredibly understanding. Whether it’s helping with the workload or covering when I’m out with a sick child, there’s always someone ready to step in. I never feel like I’m leaving someone in a bad position when I need help. It truly feels like a family.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
When I was 16 years old, I worked part-time at a large retail store. My manager told me never to say, “That’s not my job.” That stuck with me. I’ve carried that mindset into every role since. You might be asked to handle something unfamiliar but figuring it out quickly is part of the job. I think that willingness to jump in, even when it’s not listed in your job description, makes a huge difference and will serve you well in your career.
What would you say to women entering the construction industry?
I’d say don’t be afraid to speak up. Coming from a non-construction background, I was hesitant at first. Many of my teammates had decades of experience, and I was younger and one of the few women in the room. Over time, I realized that my perspective was important. Sometimes it takes a fresh set of eyes to bring creative solutions.
What would you say to someone considering a career at Gray?
When I joined Gray, I wasn’t actively looking to leave my previous job—I loved my team and my boss. I just wanted a new challenge and a fresh start in a new place. I was nervous that the “grass might not be greener,” but it turns out it absolutely was.
The family atmosphere here is real. When I had my son, the team checked in constantly asking for updates, sending food, and celebrating with me. It’s not just talk—people genuinely care. I’ve worked in places that said all the right things about culture, but Gray lives it.
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I have a three-year-old son, Bram, so most of my time revolves around him—playing outside, going to parks, or jumping on the trampoline. Personally, I really enjoy jigsaw puzzles, especially in the winter when it gets dark early. It’s relaxing and gives me a sense of accomplishment when it’s done.
