Revolutionary Distribution Center
The new 223,468 s.f. distribution facility contains cutting-edge and state-of-the-art technology. A new Automated Storage Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) was installed to maximize storage capacity and free up existing warehouse space for other purposes.
Installed by Westfalia Technologies, Inc., the AS/RS is one of the largest in the beverage industry and uses satellite technology to store pallets in multiple storage lanes. The AS/RS space contains four storage and retrieval machines (or cranes) which operate in four aisles, serving storage lanes anywhere from one pallet to eight pallets deep, and storing products seven levels high. Each crane can induct/output 90 pallets of finished goods per hour or a total of 360 pallets moving within the system. The AS/RS contains 52 pallet staging lanes, which can hold 416 total pallets. The system also contains an automated layer pick system, capable of moving 150 layers per hour. Storage capacity within the layer pick system is 255 SKUs.
The Sazerac Company, Glenmore Distillery’s parent company, invested $45 million in this project. This is all part of the company’s $71 million investment in the state of Kentucky. The investment is spread across the Glenmore Distillery and two other distilleries: a new distribution center at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, and new equipment to improve production capacity at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown.
