Finding a Family at Gray: Q&A with Chris Prichard
At Gray, team members aren’t just colleagues; they’re family. Chris Prichard, an accomplished engineer with a passion for problem-solving, has found more than just a career at Gray—he’s found a community that feels like home.
In this edition of Meet Gray, Chris shares how his journey with Gray has been transformative, shaping his professional path and personal life in ways he never anticipated. His story is a testament to the power of connection and the unique culture that makes Gray a true family.
Q: Tell me a little bit about your career arc and what led you to Gray.
A: I went to the University of Kentucky, studied mechanical engineering, and graduated in the spring of 2017. After that, I worked at a stainless steel provider for about four years. I started looking for jobs closer to Lexington because my fiancée and I wanted to be closer to a big city. A friend introduced me to Jordan Woeste, assistant project manager, at Gray, and she encouraged me to send her my resume and referred me. Long story short, I started at Gray in August 2021.
Q: What piqued your interest in Gray?
A: The company culture really stood out to me. Even though Gray is a large company now, it still has that small, family-owned company feel. That sense of being part of a close-knit team was a big draw.
Q: What is a typical day like for you in your current role?
A: A typical day involves reviewing my to-do list and follow-up items from the previous day. I spend a lot of time in meetings and on calls with subcontractors and the site team. My role includes coordinating with other project managers, handling submittals, and working through scheduling issues. I try to anticipate and mitigate any potential problems. There’s a lot of focus on collaboration, not just within my own team but across different trades.
Q: How was your integration into the team when you started at Gray?
A: Initially, I was verifying equipment lists and cross-checking documents. I really hit my stride working on the Instinct Pet Foods project, where I got involved early on and followed the project through execution.
Q: What sets Gray apart from other service providers in the construction industry?
A: The design-build approach is a major differentiator. Being able to work closely with our Gray AE team allows us to resolve issues quickly. This streamlined process is something our subcontractors appreciate because it helps keep projects moving forward without unnecessary delays.
Q: How would you describe Gray in one word or phrase?
A: Family. The relationships and camaraderie within the team are very close-knit. Many of my outside-of-work relationships now are with people I’ve worked with on projects. It feels like a second family, which makes the experience of working away from home much easier.
Q: Do you have a memorable experience since joining Gray that stands out?
A: The annual Gray Golf Scramble is a highlight for me. I love to golf, and this event brings together Gray team members, subcontractors, and others in the industry. You really get to know people and form relationships just riding around for a few hours in the same golf cart together.
Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
A: “You have two ears and one mouth for a reason.” It’s a reminder to listen more than you speak. In my job, it’s important to get the full picture before making decisions or responding, and this advice helps me stay grounded and thoughtful in my approach.
Q: If you were to pitch someone to join Gray, what would your elevator pitch be?
A: I would emphasize the family atmosphere and the fact that you’re not just a number here. Gray offers a supportive community, where your contributions are valued, and the work environment supports personal and professional growth. It’s a place where you can build meaningful relationships and feel truly part of a team.
