ABC Alabama Awards Gray an Award of Merit

Gray Construction was recognized at the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Alabama Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards Dinner on Thursday, November 10, 2011. Gray received an award of Merit for the Austal Modular Manufacturing Facility (MMF) Phase 1 and Warehouse Facility in Mobile, Ala. Gray designed and built the first phase of the 442,667 s.f. MMF used to produce the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) for the U.S. Navy. ABC’s Awards of Excellence Program has become the premiere competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across Alabama.

A few project highlights for Austal MMF Phase 1 include:

•The facility measures more than 1,000 feet long and 350 feet wide or approximately 6 football fields.

•Houses a 250-ton crane, (5) 40-ton cranes, (4) 20-ton cranes, (5) 10-ton cranes and (6) 5-ton cranes.

•Over 7,000 tons of steel were used.

•Long span steel plate girders weighing 109 tons and 137 tons were installed.

•23,000 dump truck loads of dirt moved.

•31,000 cubic yards of concrete used.

Gray Construction, ranked 3rd among the U.S. Top Green Contractors in Manufacturing Plants Construction, was selected to design and build Phase 2 of Austal’s MMF and a new three-story office complex currently under construction.
