For its first project with Gray, the customer selected the company to design and build an expansion of its existing operation in Starkville, MS. Gray is maintaining a minimally disruptive schedule that allows the Starkville plant to remain operational for the entirety of the project.
Gray’s scope includes architecture, engineering, procurement, construction, and process design for the facility’s production building, warehouse, and offices. The customer chose design-build delivery with Gray due to the project’s aggressive timeline and plans for LEED® certification. The facility features a 130 foot, 6-story tower for housing specialized process equipment.
Foremost among the project’s challenges has been coordinating construction on a highly active industrial jobsite without impacting the customer’s ongoing operations. This has required expert project and site management to sequence and schedule activities while keeping site traffic to a minimum. These activities include demolition and building pad prep, underground utilities and hardscapes, new foundations and footings, structural steel erection, equipment delivery and staging, building systems installation, and more.
The project represents the second expansion of the Starkville facility, which originally opened in 1979 and was expanded in 2010. The current expansion is one of the largest investments for an industrial project in Starkville’s history. When completed, the new facility will add more than 125 jobs to the region and will position Southwire as a continued leader in the U.S. in wire and cable solutions.
