Gray was awarded the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Alabama Excellence in Construction award on Thursday, October 18th, 2012 at the 23rd Annual ABC of Alabama Awards Dinner. Gray received the award for the Austal USA office complex in Mobile, Ala. The 108,000 s.f. office complex is situated on Austal’s Mobile Manufacturing campus. The nautically themed structure contains high end finishes and a reconfigurable multi-use room capable of seating 400 people auditorium-style. The new office building allowed Austal to co-locate team members who were spread in separate buildings and trailers.

Gray provided architecture; engineering; and construction management to the new office complex. Gray first worked with Austal in 2009 on Phase One of Austal’s Modular Manufacturing Facility (MMF). This facility, approximately the size of 6 football fields, is used to produce the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) for the U.S. Navy. In 2011, Gray was tapped again to provide design-build services for the second phase of Austal’s MMF. This facility is a mirror image of phase one.

Gray, ranked 2nd among the U.S. Top Green Contractors in Manufacturing Plant Construction, currently has several large projects, mostly located across the South, that are underway or recently completed including: a Michelin Earthmover tire manufacturing plant in Starr, S.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem, N.C.; a Caterpillar Inc. manufacturing facility near Athens, Ga.; a Siemens gas turbine plant in Charlotte, N.C.; and a Whirlpool plant in Cleveland, Tenn.

Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) is a national association with 77 chapters representing 25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms with two million employees. Locally, the ABC of Alabama Chapter has over 700 member companies. ABC's membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors of the industry.
