This greenfield facility will produce up to nine ships a year, made entirely of carbon steel.
The new location will feature two large roll-up doors at 56′ wide and 45′ tall and will have a clear span of 225′ with girders that span the length of the building that will be 15′ deep. At least 12 cranes will be needed during the construction phase of this project.
This new facility will be located alongside the company’s existing aluminum construction operations in Mobile, AL. The company’s module manufacturing facility will be split in half, with a wall dividing the steel side and aluminum side to keep components and tools in their proper areas. The addition of steel capability ensures that Austal USA will remain a major contributor to the U.S. shipbuilding industrial base.
In addition, a complex mechanical infrastructure is being integrated as a part of this facility, such as welding gas, compressed air, and dust collection ducts, all trenched underground, to avoid overhead conflicts in the fabricating process.
At peak construction, some 200 workers will be on site. The project is expected to be operational in the spring of 2022.
