Spec Engineering to Invest $2.8 Million in Employee Growth

Spec Engineering, a Gray company, plans to invest more than $2.8 million in 2022 as the company fills demand in the areas of design, engineering, manufacturing, and installation. Over the next 12 months, Spec is expecting to add at least 40 new team members across multiple departments.

Over the past few years, Spec has continued to grow in staff, projects, and equipment offerings. Contributing factors include the introduction of the UL panel shop and dedicated project, design, and process teams within the engineering department. CandyWorx, a confectionery equipment brand of Spec Engineering, has also acquired the DepositMoreTM depositor, Cacao Cucina® bean-to-bar line, and REVOLVTM belt coaters, over the past few years, increasing their product offerings of quality confectionery equipment manufactured in the US.

With exponential growth on the horizon, Spec will move into a new 75,000 s.f. headquarter facility in Naperville, IL to house its’ expanded manufacturing shop and administrative offices in 2022. The UL panel shop will continue to reside in Plainfield, IL, and the River North Chicago, IL office will become a lively engineering loft with modern meeting and collaboration space for customers to engage one-on-one with Spec engineers as they plan and develop new opportunities together.

Aside from growing the team, Spec realizes the importance of supporting current employees through professional development opportunities. Spec currently invests in employees through leadership development programs, safety trainings, industry organizations, and continued education. The leadership team has been identifying strategic growth opportunities and implementing department leads to help guide the growth plan and objectives. In 2021, Spec also invested in nine employees who completed the OSHA 1910 30-hour training.

Being a part of the Gray family of brands, Spec continues to have a small company feel while being supported by a large, family-owned design-build construction company. As a Gray company, employees are eligible for the employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) which truly speaks to the company’s culture and value of each team member’s contributions.
