On June 10, 2009, Gray Construction hosted a Green Scene meeting at their Lexington, KY office. Green Scene is a monthly networking event held by the Kentucky Chapter of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).

Guests enjoyed networking, a tour of Gray Construction's office space and a presentation by Lee Bagley, AIA, LEED AP on the Bernheim Visitors Center and how it achieved the status of the first LEED Platinum rating awarded to a building in Kentucky and the surrounding region. Gray Construction was the General Contractor for this LEED Construction project. The key sustainable design features at the Bernheim Visitors Center include:

Cradle to cradle life cycle:

Some of the lumber was harvested from old Bourbon rack houses being dismantle by Brown-Forman and Jim Beam brands.

Some areas utilized re-used cypress form H.J. Heinz pickle vats which were being decommissioned and heading for a land fill.

Beams and columns can easily be unbolted and reused in another structure.

"Gray" water from the roof captured in an 8,000 gallon cistern for toilets.

Ground water purification thru the use of features like a native grass vegetative roof, a rain garden, and parking runoff captured by "oyster mushroom beds"

Local concrete with a high concentration of fly ash diverted from the landfill and crushed unused or waste concrete for aggregate

To learn more about the Bernheim Visitors Center, please visit http://www.gray.com/green/projects/12?page=2 and http://www.bernheim.org/news_old.htm.
